The Mediastinal Working Group is planning a study on thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms
Currently, thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are classified identical to NENs in the lung. While there are many similarities between thymic and lung NENs, there are also features that appear to be unique to thymic NEN. In addition, there are NENs in the lung and in the thymus that are morphologically neuroendocrine tumors/carcinoids (NETs) but have a mitotic count that is higher than what is currently accepted for atypical carcinoid tumors. In the thymus, except for case reports, these tumors have not been studied thoroughly.
Given the rarity of these neoplasms, a multi-institutional study is needed to be able to include a larger number of patients.
Aim:
To investigate the clinical, imaging, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and possibly molecular spectrum of thymic NENs (neuroendocrine tumors/carcinoids, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, small cell carcinoma) based on a multi-institutional, international cohort of patients.
We would like to invite you to participate in the study or contribute cases. Any subspecialty is needed as these patients require a multi-disciplinary approach to diagnosis, treatment and management. Please reach out to Dr. Anja Roden (roden.anja@mayo.edu) if you would like to participate.
